Sitting in the balcony
gazing at
the flowering frangipani
and the tall Ashoka trees.
Water streaming
through their leaves.
Dripping on to
the grass below
turned brown
in the long cold winter.
I look at the cars
driving by
splashing water
on the gleaming tarmac.
Their headlights
piles of fallen leaves.
A sight I have seen
a thousand times
or more.
This scene replayed
over and over
in this very same place.
And I find myself
swept away
on a flood of memories
rainy evenings
just like these.
